creatures of the night

12.6.2026 – 31.8.2026 | Galleriakäytävä

The exhibition presents the winning works of the Children’s Glass Design Competition. The competition was organized by Nuutajärvi Glass Village Cultural Foundation in early 2026 for designers aged 7–12. Nearly 300 children from across Finland participated through their homes, schools and hobby groups.

The designs could be created through drawing, painting, sculpting, or
crafting. Participants submitted a photograph of their design along with
a short presentation text of their creatures’ characteristics and
activities.

A five-member jury of glass and communications professionals selected 14
winning designs, which were blown in glass in early June. The young
designers were able to observe the glassblowing process up close and
will receive the finished works as their own after the exhibition.

The theme inspired participants to imagine what might be roaming about
after dark. The designs included both fantastical creatures and
nocturnal animals.

The theme also provided an opportunity to explore exciting and sometimes
frightening subjects through art, such as darkness, emotional and
friendship skills, loneliness, and war. We hope that giving visual form
to difficult topics has helped both children and their families process
them.

The exhibition has been produced in cooperation with Nuutajärven Lasi.
The competition is supported by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation
and Otto A. Malm´s Donation Fund.
