OIVA TOIKKA BIRDNEST

A permanent home for glass birds

The Oiva Toikka Birdnest is a permanent exhibition of glass birds designed by artist and professor Oiva Toikka. It tells the story of both the birds and Oiva Toikka himself. Toikka’s birds were produced in Nuutajärvi for more than 40 years. The first mass-produced flycatchers took flight in 1972, beginning the birds’ migration across the world.

Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) became known for his imaginative and bold designs, especially his glass birds. Nuutajärvi, the home of the glass bird collection, was also Toikka’s and his family’s home village for many decades. The village still hosts the glass school Toikka helped establish — the first vocational program in Finland leading to a formal qualification in glassmaking.
No one knows the exact number of glass bird species created by Oiva Toikka, but there are hundreds. The Birdnest collection consists of birds owned by the Nuutajärvi Glass Village Cultural Foundation, birds that were already in the village, pieces on loan from other collections, and donated birds acquired through a special campaign.
