PRYKÄRI GLASS MUSEUM

The History of glass village and Rotating Exhibitions

The Prykäri Glass Museum’s permanent exhibition showcases glass made in Nuutajärvi from the 19th century to the present day. The exhibition also features pieces designed for Nuutajärvi by some of the most significant designers of the 20th century — including works by Gunnel Nyman, Kaj Franck, and Saara Hopea.

Upstairs, you’ll find the Prykärin Vinttigalleria, which is an art gallery for rotating exhibitions. Admission to the gallery is included with the museum ticket. In addition, there are rotating exhibitions in the museum lobby. A small museum shop is also available near the ticket counter.

The museum building was constructed during the glass factory’s major expansion period in the 1850s. Originally, the building housed the factory’s brewery — known as the “prykäri,” which also gave the building its current name.

The Prykäri Glass Museum is designed by glass artist and professor Kaj Franck. Franck created the museum’s interior architecture and display cases and selected the objects to be exhibited. The museum opened to the public in 1977 and was renovated as part of the glass village’s major restoration for the year 2024. The collections on display in the museum’s main exhibition are currently owned by the Museum of Architecture and Design.
